(Вильям Howitt) — плодовитый англ. писатель (1795-1879), квакер; в конце жизни посвятил себя исключительно спиритизму. Написал: "History of priestcraft"; "Tales of Pantika"; "Colonization and christianity"; "German experiences"; "The aristocracy of England"; "The hall and the hamlet"; "Visits to remarkable places" (роскошное изд.); "Homes and haunts of the British poets"; "Natural history of magie"; "Land, labour and gold"; "The man of the people"; "History of the supernatural in allages and nation"; "The religion of Rome by a Roman" и мн. др. Жена его, Мария Ботэм (Botham; 1799-1888) — тоже англ. писательница. Написала вместе с мужем: "The forest ministrel"; "The desolation of Eyam" и др., самостоятельно — стихи, рассказы, детские книги и пр. Ср. "Mary H., an autobiography" (Л., 1889).
